To our blog readers: Our wx (weather report) uses abbreviations known to mariners(plus my own short-hand). They were developed by meteorologists long before new technologies came around. They help mariners save time and money (in satellite communication one pays for each character and space). My 5/27/2012 summary translates: Tropical Storm Beryl should pass well N (north) of you, given its and your current course and speed on your way to Bermuda.

Position 33*24N-69*53W. Expect 240 nm from center of Beryl as it passes to our north tonight. Plan to rig storm tri & boom crutch this afternoon, and pre-rig sea anchor rode only. Will advise Coast Guard of position. Currently sunny day with 16SW and nice sailing.

As my son is on the Celestial heading to Bermuda, would you please comment on the level of danger that the boat will encounter today with regard to tropical storm Beryl. Thank you.

Rita Hanson said...

Captain Hoffmann responds:

In response to above question, various National Weather Service forecast models of today tell us that the strong winds extend between 90 nm and 150 nm from Beryl's center in the direction of CELESTIAL's path. CELESTIAL has actually diverged to the south over the last two days to put more separation between the boat and the storm. A separation of 150 NM would have been adequate but they will now be about 250 NM from the storm center, which is comforting. The crew of CELESTIAL will feel the effects of the storm, but both boat and crew are well equipped to handle such conditions. The storm preparations that Captain Tom talked about in his communication this morning are the steps that all student crew study as part of their pre-departure literature. They are now put into place as prudent exercises in preparation for possible storm conditions in their location. Most ocean students hope for such conditions, as they provide a great learning experience!

Position 33*18N-69*16W. Rigged trisail, boom crutch & sea anchor rode & bridle; Sea anchor in aft head. Secured mainsail, genoa & staysail. Removed bimini; not dodger. Underway on engine & trisail. All well & good workers. Dinty Moore still tops at sea.

Rita Hanson said...

The preparations Captain Tursi talks about in his last correspondence are prudent preparations made during daylight hours when the crew was fresh; they will assure a good night for the crew. Under trisail and engine power, they will make slower, but safer, progress than under full sail.
